Introduction to disease and pathology Flashcards
What is health
health is a the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
- it is a continuum
Health continuum
- wellness on one end as the optimum level of functioning
- ilness so unfavorable as to result in death on the other
What are the theories of disease
- psychoneuoimmunology
- quantum model of health and disease
- conscioueness-based health care
Psychoneuroimmunology
interactions between behavior and neural, endocrine, enteric, and immune system are integrated for the immune function as a defense
- the interaction with the pathogen and the systems of the body
Quantum Model of health and Disease
- we are exposed to different energies that can make us better to response to pathogens or it can make us not better as responding
Conscious-based Health care
- Consciousness (in the form of beliefs, feelings, emotions, expectations, and intention) plays a central role in maintaining and restoring health and well-being when it has been compromised
Acute illness
- usually refers to an illness of disease that has a relatively rapid onset and short duration
- severity varies (based on exposure, systems involved etc)
Chronic illness
Illness that include one or more of the following
- permanent impairment or disability
- residual physical and cognitive disability
- need for special rehabilitation or long-term medical management
what does the biopsychosocial model consider
- health condition
- body structure and function
- activities and participation
- environment
- personal/psycosocial factors
- continuum between functioning and disability (IFC is based on this)
ICF model componenets
- impairments
- limitations in activities
- and participation
Impairments:
- impairments in the body structure or function when there is damage/it cannot function properly
Activites
- performing a functional task
participation
- role
- refers to fulfilling your life roles such as a student, job and duties
Primary prevention in health promotion and wellness
- stopping disease from starting
- walking 8000 steps or more was associated with a lower risk of all-cause cardiovascular mortality in a curvilinear fashion
Secondary Prevention
- detect disease early through screening
