Introduction to disease Flashcards
Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) rates:
Limitation due to disease that lower your quality life. One DALY= loss of 1 year of full health
Epithelial Tissue:
Protective and secretory, involve in absorption
Connective tissues:
Structural and contractile.
Type of Cellular Adaptation:
- Atrophy
- Hypertrophy
- Hyperplasia
- Metaplasia
- Dysplasia
Cause of Atrophy:
- Decreased workload
- Inadequate blood supply
- Inadequate hormonal stimulation
- Inadequate nutrient supply
Heterophagy:
the cell is taking in something external and breaking it down to be smaller
Autophagy:
the cell breaks itself, digesting part of itself to become smaller. (way for the cell to stay alive during period of deprivation)
Type of Hypertrophy:
- Physiological Hypertrophy
- Pathological Hypertrophy
- Enzyme induction (ex. hepatocyte in the liver)
Hyperplasia is:
increase of number of cell.
Metaplasia is:
Exchanging one cell type for another, or adding another cell type on top of what is already present.
Which stage of cellular adaptation is the normal cell is still functional?
Atrophy
Dysplasia is:
abnormal cell (not the same size or shape, nuclei diff size and divide more quickly)
Anaplasia:
Cancer
