Introduction to computer networks definitions Flashcards
Data packet
A single package of data that travels along the network path.
Gateway
A network hardware that forwards data packets between computer networks that uses different protocols until it reaches its destination.
Hubs
Network hardware that broadcasts data to all devices on the network.
LAN
Local Area Network (LAN) is a network of computers within the same building not necessarily connected via the Internet.
Malware
A computer program that is intentionally designed to harm the functioning of a computer.
MAC address
A unique address of 48 bits that is assigned to a network interface card.
Modem
Network hardware that turns digital data into electrical signals and vice versa.
Packet switching
Exchange of data packets between various routers from source to reach its destination
Routing
The process of selecting the path for transmission of data packets in between two devices in a network, or in between two different networks, or across multiple networks.
Routing table
A table maintained by a router that contains information about the topology of the network.
Router
Network hardware that forwards data packets between computer networks until it reaches its destination.
WAN
Wide Area Network (WAN) is a network of LANs in different geographical places.
VPN
A Virtual Private Network is a type of network that creates a safe and secure connection for an organisation over the Internet.
Wi-Fi
A technology that enables wireless connectivity to all sort of devices
Switches
Network hardware that filters the data packets according to the MAC address and forwards it to that specific device.
