Introduction to cellular + molecular biology Flashcards
Semester 1 year 1
What is cell theory?
-multicellular organisms are derived from a single cell
-cells obtain energy + utilize chemicals
-cells use hereditary information that’s passed on during cell division
What are the general characteristics of cells?
-can obtain energy from light and/or chemicals
-can use energy to grow + multiply
-contain hereditary information that’s passed on to its progeny
What are the physical characteristics of cells?
-all cells are enveloped by a plasma membrane
-eukaryotic cells have organelles
What does a plasma membrane do?
Provides a physical barrier between the cell + its environment
What is the content of eukaryotic cells?
-nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi, lysosomes, peroxisomes, cytoskeletal structure
-in plants: chloroplasts
Where are vacuoles found?
-prominent in plant cells
-found in some animal + bacterial cells
What is the central dogma of molecular biology?
-genetic information stored as DNA
-DNA copied into RNA by transcription
-RNA used to make protein
