Introduction To Biology Flashcards
What is the second characteristic of life?
Energy use and metabolism
What is the first first characteristic of life?
Cell and organization (each cell can only perform the job associated with its specific function )
What is the third characteristic of life?
Response to environmental changes
What is the fourth characteristic of life?
Regulation and homeostasis
What is the fifth characteristic of life?
Growth and development
What is the sixth characteristic of life?
Reproduction
What is the seventh characteristic of life?
Biological evolution
What are the major themes of biology?
There are 7: Evolution Reproduction and inheritance Development Structure Energy relationships Ecology Science and society
What Are the steps of the scientific method?
It’s is an organized way to figure something out, the steps are:
- Make an observation
- Propose a hypothesis
- Design and perform an experiment to test your hypothesis
- Analyze your data to determine whether to accept or reject your hypothesis
- If necessary propose and test a new hypothesis
What is the independent variable in an experiment?
The part of the experiment the experimenter changes
What is the dependent variable in an experiment?
This variable changes as a result of the changes in the independent variable
What is the control group in an experiment?
A standard to compare with the results in an experiment
What determines the validity of an experiment?
By making it a fair test and by keeping all the control variables constant and by making only the independent variable to affect the dependent variable
