Introduction to Biology Flashcards
Define homeostasis and give three examples:
The maintaining of a stable internal environment
~ Sweating
~Shivering
~ pH blood level
What is the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction?
Asexual means you only have one parent and sexual means you have two parents.
Which type of reproduction (sexual or asexual) gives rise to greater diversity and why?
Sexual, you get genes and DNA from both of your parents whereas with asexual you would only get it from your one parent.
What characteristic do ALL living organisms share? This is also the hereditary material of all living things. (HINT: It is inside the nucleus of your cells.)?
DNA
Are cells organized?
Yes
What’s the difference between unicellular and multicellular?
Unicellular means you only have one parent and multicellular means you have two or more parents.
What is the difference between an autotroph and heterotroph?
An autotroph makes its food from the energy the sun gives off and heterotrophs get there energy from eating other things.
Give an example of autotroph and heterotroph.
Autotroph: Plants
Heterotroph: Humans and Animals
What is biology? List three things you might study if you were a biologist.
Biology is the study of all living things. If I were a biologist I would study Animals, Humans, and Insects.
What is the purpose of science?
The purpose of science is to increase the knowledge of the universe to people ; so we can answer and solve questions.
What do members of a species (as a whole) HAVE to be able to do to ensure its survival?
Evolve
In your own words describe one of the experiments you have conducted in the class.
We dropped a tennis ball from different heights using a meter stick and saw how high the ball bounced.
Describe what an independent variable is:
The thing in an experiment that you can change.
What was the IV in the Tennis Ball Lab?
The drop height.
Describe what a dependent variable is:
Variable that results or responds to the change.
What was the DV in the Tennis Ball Lab?
Bounce Height
Describe what a control is:
Group that does not get the IV
- -> Standard for comparison
- -> The “Normal” version
Why is it so important to have a control group?
So that you know what the experiment would’ve ended up doing if you didn’t have an IV.
Describe what a constant is
Something that stays the same throughout an experiment
Why is it important to only change one variable at a time?
So that you know which variable made the difference.
When conducting research where would you find the most current and reliable information about a scientific topic?
Scientific journals
Describe Pasteur’s experiment:
If cells arise from nonliving substances, then they will appear in sterile broth.
Describe Redi’s experiment:
Only flies can make flies. Rotting meat cannot be transformed and it cannot make flies.
What were Pasteur and Redi trying to disprove?
That flies and maggots don’t come from meat and that cells are not spontaneously generated.
What unit is the metric system based on?
10
How many millimeters are in a centimeter?
10
What piece of lab equipment can be used to find the volume of an irregular object?
Graduated Cylinder
What variable do you label the X-Axis with?
IV
What variable do you label the Y-Axis with?
DV
