Adapted Physical Activity
Any sport of PA that is modified to enable individuals with impairment
Adapted Physical Education
Individualized program that included physical and motor fitness, fundamental movement skills and patterns
who do you adapt for
Anyone who would not gain optional benefits or is at risk of harm from the activity
Infants = developmental delays
Children = varying disabilities, from neurological to learning disorders
Adults = injuries, poor movement matters, chronic diseases (obesity)
3 Disability General Categories
- Developmental and Behaviour
- autism - Physical
- cerebral palsy - Sensory
- blind
Life Course Perspective of Disability
Infancy = early intervention to support
School age year = allow development of appropriate functional behaviours
Adulthood = physical and recreational activities
Common Disability
Pain - the most common
Flexibility
Mobility
Mental health
Physical Literacy vs Competence
Literacy
- moving with confidence
Competence
- movement skills (building blocks)
4 Barriers
- intrapersonal Barrier
- Interpersonal Barrier
- Structural Barrier
- Sociocultural Barrier
Intrapersonal Identity
what and how to address
Self confidence
Embarrassment/ Anxiety
Fatigue
How to address = reinforcement of doing well, role model, acceptance
Interpersonal Barrier
what and how to address
Focusing on person’s disability
Oversimplifying or lack of challenge
Lack of education or information
How to address = communication, educate ourselves, provide options
Structural Barrier
Coast of adapted equipment
Physical barriers
Inaccessible facilities
Lack of adequate transportation
How to address = make space, adapt equipment, noise level
Sociocultural Barriers
Lack of cultural respect and inclusive language
Lack of leadership opportunities for students of all abilities
Inexperience in PA environment
How to address = encourage team leadership, ask them to help organize
What is the Platinum Rule when Interacting with someone
- Never make assumptions
- ask how to help
- speak to person
Good Adaptions
- promote interaction
- meets needs of all students
- provide PA for all as much as possible
- safe
STEP Framework
S = space
- size and shape
T = task
- varying actions
E = equipment
- different forms of equipment
P = people
- organize groupings by ability
Handicap
A disadvantage that limits individuals, resulting from impairment or disability
Disability
Lack of ability to perform an activity within the range considered normal
Impairment
Loss of psychological, physiological or anatomical function
