Acknowledgement to country
Before I start I would like to pay my respect by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we meet today and pay my respects to their Elders past and present.
Who he is- Cassius
The name Cassius Turvey comes from the birth name of boxer Muhammad Ali because his family wanted him to be named after a strong black man. His mum described him as “a leader and a young ambitious role model for his community.” He was a loving boy that gave so much away but never asked for anything in return.
What happened
Tragically, on Thursday, October 13th Cassius Turvey was the victim of an alleged brutal attack whilst walking home from school. Cassius’ alleged perpetrators, beat Cassius with a metal pole, which eventually forced the boy to succumb to his fatal injuries. Cassius Turvey was a year 9 student who had his life ended by a 21-year-old. I now ask you how is that fair in any way? how is that not racially motivated?
was it racially motivated
This extreme act of violence has been labelled as “clearly racially motivated” by Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. Witnesses at the scene of the attack stated that the perpetrators called out racist names before their rampage began.
similar attacks
And it isn’t just Cassius Turvey who is subject to discrimination at such a young age with 1 in 5 school children experiencing racism every day. This exposure to such hateful views can be very damaging to young children.
fake rallies
When we hear this sort of sickening news about racially motivated attacks, it rallies up large groups of people who want to fight for change in society. However, a week or two later and these people have given up on the fight for justice and their once bright flame has gone out. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Maybe that’s you, who once was passionate about an issue but lost interest. What are you doing now to change our society, let me guess, nothing?
who am i
Hi, my name is Jeremy Hammond, and I thank you for accepting me into your year 7 and 8 classroom today. I am here today to talk to you about how change can occur. How every one of you sitting in this room can help this fight, not just for Cassius Turvey and his family but for all victims of racial attacks and discrimination of all kinds?
