broader issue speech Flashcards
history of discrimination
The issue of Aboriginal discrimination has been around forever in Australian society; however, this doesn’t mean that people understand it. 57-67% of Australians having little or no knowledge of Indigenous history or culture.
From the moment non-Indigenous people set foot on this ancient land, discrimination has been a part of Aboriginal people’s lives. Laws were made to restrict them and push them to the outskirts of society.
It has only been recently that we have changed our way of life and finally accepted them in society. It only took a couple of hundred years for people to start thinking straight.
facts
However, it still seems that they get pushed away, and given a slap in the face when asking for help. It was found 37% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experienced racial abuse in the previous six months. So much for a progressive society, right?
This occurs in their everyday life too. As 32% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander respondents have experienced racial discrimination from “local shop owners and/or staff”, compared to 8% of respondents from the general community.
The ugly truth of the bashing
This comparison alone shows how unfairly Aboriginal people get treated compared to white Australians. How has the problem gotten so far that an innocent 15-year-old boy is being beaten to death because of his skin colour? This is outrageous, this sort of horrific attack is unacceptable (to occur on Australian soil.) These events should never happen. This cowardly incident calls for immediate action from our community. It gives us an opportunity for leaders to be born. That’s you sitting in front of me.
