One of the most powerful scenes of the documentary was when Ai Weiwei receives a haircut from one of the local refugees. The documentary uses a mid shot of Ai staring straight into the camera which breaks the fourth wall of film, while he receives the haircut.

The value of identity is further shown in the scene where Ai is seen bargaining with the local people over some fruit. The scene shows Ai displaying levels of dignity as he gives them a sense of purpose.

The scene where the man is telling Ai about everything he has lost, including his money and family uses actuality footage which shows an uncut version of the documentary, the footage is raw. From this it shows the man extremely emotional, he is crying and having difficulty breathing due to him crying.

the mid shot shows authenticity. it reminds the audience they are observing real-life interactions and invites them to engage with the emotions and significance of the moment
