Introduction Molecular Cell biology Flashcards
How do we categorise cells?
Eukaryotes and prokaryotes
What is the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes? Explain with respect to DNA
Prokaryotes lack membrane bound organelles, which eukaryotes have. Their genetic information remains suspended within the cell as DNA instead of being enclosed within a membrane such as the nuclear envelope.
What is molecular cell biology interested in studying
cells, Molecules and whole organism models
Whole organism models used include:
What do we introduce into them
Rat, mice, fruitfly, plants, sea urchin and nematode (worms). We can introduce mutations into the organism to observe the effect elicited by the gene.
Organelles include
Mitochondria, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and Nucleus
What is a supramolecular complex
When subunits come together to establish a larger structure
Examples of supramolecular complexes include
Ribosomes, chromosomes, nuclear envelope.
