Introduction and Pharmaceutic Phase Flashcards
PHARMACOLOGY
study of drugs
3 stages of a Drug Action; EXPLAIN EACH.
- Pharmaceutic Phase – you dissolve the drugs; it
is the process of dissolution of the drugs. - Pharmacokinetic Phase – it is the movement of
drugs inside the body - Pharmacodynamic Phase – the study of drug concentration and its effects to the body
PHARMACEUTIC PHASE
Only drugs in solid form undergo Pharmaceutic Phase
(ex. tablets and capsules)
2 Pharmaceutic processes (describe each)
Disintegration – crushed into small particles
Dissolution – liquid form
Between tablets and capsules, which is faster to dissolve and why?
Between tablets and capsules, the dissolution of capsules is faster since when you open it, it is powder in form.
Excipients
Excipients – are fillers and inert substances used in drug preparation to allow drugs to take on a particular size and shape and to enhance dissolution.
Drug additives
Drug additives – such as K and Na increase the
absorbability of a drug.
Rate limiting
Rate limiting is the time it takes the drug to disintegrate and dissolve to become available for the body to absorb.
Enteric-coated drugs
Enteric-coated drugs – resist disintegration in the gastric acid of the stomach, so disintegration does not occur until it reaches the alkaline environment of the small intestines.
Food in GIT (gastrointestinal tract)
Food in GIT (gastrointestinal tract) – may or may not
interfere with dissolution and absorption of drugs
2 usual reasons why the drugs depends on an
empty of full stomach
2 usual reasons why the drugs depends on an
empty of full stomach:
Empty stomach: better absorption.
Full stomach: for patient to experience
less GI distress
