Introduction and Applications Flashcards
What is biochemistry?
The study of the chemistry of life
What does biochemistry aim to describe?
How organisms function at a molecular level using the techniques and terminology of chemistry
How can biochemistry be applied to medicine?
Can understand the molecular basis of a disease. Can also get a precise diagnosis and personalized medicine.
How was biochemistry able to provide a treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)?
Biochemistry was able to pinpoint the cause of the disease as a chromosomal translocation that caused the BCR and ABL1 genes to fuse and create a defective enzyme that caused uncontrollable cell division. They were able to determine the shape of the enzyme and design an inhibitor, and later designed inhibitors for other possible mutant forms of the enzyme.
How can biochemistry be applied to the food industry?
Production of enzymes to improve the taste of food and stop it from going stale
