Introduction Flashcards
What is reciprocity?
When Babies and careers mutually respond to each other’s behaviour as if they are taking turns
What is interactional synchrony?
Detailed mimicry and mirroring between carer and baby which forms the early basis of communication
What did meltzof and Moore show?
That infants as young as 3 days could imitate facial expressions
Describe Isabella’s study
30 mothers and children - 10 of each attachment type
Followed up after 8 months - longitudinal
Found positive correlation with interactional synchrony and Time
Secure attachment had more interactional synchrony
Describe Murray and travatherns study
2 month old babies
Step one: baby interacted with mother through video screen
- mother responded normally and researches observed baby
Step two: mother didn’t respond in synchrony
Signs of distress when mother didn’t respond in synchrony
What is pre attachment
0-2 months baby starts to learn to separate people from objects
What is indiscriminate attachment
2-7months baby doesn’t show difference between a carer and a stranger
What in discriminate attachment
7-9 months forms a clear attachment to a primary carer shows separation distress and stranger anxiety
What is multiple attachment
9months onwards Attached to many people eg grandparents
Describe and evaluate Schaffer and Emerson’s study
60 babies observed in working class homes in Glasgow every 4 weeks from birth up to 18 months Found 95% attached to mother. 39% weren't attached to main feeder
- limited sample, Glasgow - low population validity
- eco validity, at home
- demand characteristics - social desirability
Describe geigers study
Fathers are more exciting + physical and less able to detect distress
