Introduction Flashcards
What are the four separation techniques?
Filtering, evaporation, distillation and chromatography
What is a synthesis reaction?
When a compound is made from simple reactants. E.g. Magnesium + oxygen -> magnesium oxide
What is a decomposition reaction?
When a compound breaks down into two or more products, e.g. Copper carbonate -> copper oxide +carbon dioxide
What is an element?
Contains one type of atom containing the same amount of protons
What is a compound?
Combination of two or more different elements in a FIXED proportion, joined by strong bond
What is a molecule?
What is created when two or more non metals chemically bond
What is a mixture?
When and elements and compounds are mixed together but aren’t chemically bonded
How can mixtures be separated?
Physical means like heat and magnets
List three ways to decompose a compound?
Electricity, heat and light
How are the components in a mixture fixed?
They aren’t
What does decomposition generally require?
A source of energy, for example electrolysis or thermal decomposition.
Wha does corrosive mean?
These materials can give you blisters
What does harmful mean?
These materials can kill living cells.
What does toxic mean?
These materials can kill you.
What does irritant mean?
These materials can make your skin itchy.
