Introduction Flashcards
What makes it important that attachment has been evolved and why?
Attachment is important in increasing the likelihood of infant survival, as human babies are born helpless, and would not survive without someone to attach to
Define attachment
An emotional bond between two people that leads to proximity-seeking behaviour and lasts over time.
What are the four type of being that psychologists have studied to see how attachment forms?
Babies, infants, adults, animals
What are the three behaviours associated with attachment?
Proximity seeking behaviour
Separation distress
Secure-base behaviour
Define proximity seeking behaviour
The two people will seek each other out and try to stay physically close
Define separation distress
People show signs of distress when they are separated
Define secure-base behaviour and provide an example.
This is an almost reaffirmation of the attachment for a sense of security
E.g infants keep going back to their mum/dad for a hug before going to play again
What are the two key concepts to attachment?
-babies form a main primary attachment before all others
-most form bonds with mothers, however in UK 10% are to the fathers.
What does PCG stand for?
Primary care giver
What does PAF stand for?
Primary attachment figure
What is the difference between primary Care giver (PCG) and primary attachment figure (PAF)?
PCG - this is the person that cares for the baby the most
However,
PAF - this is the person the baby/ child is most attached to
They are usually the same person but not always.
