What is personality
Enduring pattern of thoughts and feelings
Stable across situations, consistent
Thinking, e.g.: positive or negative
Feeling, e.g.: anxious, happy
Behaving, eg.: social, distant
DOES NOT include feelings like hunger or arousal
Origins
Debate wether it’s nature or nurture
It is influenced by genes but also experience
Five-factor model
OCEAN
(Openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism)
Behaviorist theory
Shaping personality through learning and observable behavior
-> reward and punishment
Social cognitive theory
Focus on people’s beliefs, expectations and interactions with environment
Banduras concept of self-efficacy
Humanistic theory
Self-actualization and positive aspect of human nature
Maslow hierarchy of needs suggests personality is made due to humans wanting to achieve bigger things
Assessment of personality
Used in psychotherapy services aswell as neuropsychology, medical psych, industrial organizational psychology and forensic psych
Self report measures(questionnaires)
- people are expected to know a lot about themselves
- people don’t always say the truth
-might now know their true self
Projective test
Ambiguous stimulus and participant has to reply, to uncover underlying desires
