Introduction Flashcards
Study of abnormal/ diseased tissues found in the oral cavity
Oral Pathology
Group of similar cells arranged in a characteristic manner to perform a particular function
Tissue
5 methods of study
- Visual Exam
- Radiograph
- Microscope
- Ultrasound
- Signs/ Symptoms of the Disease
This is seen by the examiner
Signs
This is felt by the patient
Symptom
Absence of an organ resulting from failure of the appearance of the primordium of an organ in embryonic development
Agenesis
Complete failure of development of a structure from the embryonic development
Aplasia
Cause (bacterial, viral, fungal)
Etiology
Change in which cells of one type are transformed/ replaced by cells of another type
Metaplasia
Increase on the number of normal cells of an organ/ tissue with consequent increase in the tissue size
Hyperplasia
Increase in size of a tissue or organ caused by an increase in the size of the cells of the part involved
Hypertrophy
Decrease in size of the cell compared to a normal one
Atrophy
Refers to metabolic disturbances and deterioration of the cells or the area immediately surrounding the cells
Degenerative Changes
Death of the tissue
Necrosis
Increase in blood supply
Hyperemia
