My dissertation deals with one of the most mysterious figures in Greek culture—the Greek pantheon goddess Artemis.
המטרה העיקרית שלי במחקר היא לברר מי היתה ארטמיס, ואיזה תפקידים החא גילמה בתרבות יוון העתיקה.

My main aim in my study is to figure out who Artemis was, what roles did she play, in the ancient greece .
And I’m working to do so by focusing on her visual depictions

There are thousands of visual representations depicting Artemis’s figure, her family members, and her various cults.
But because our time is so limited, I chose one image, and I want us to examine it carefully to see how this image may shed light on one of Artemis’s aspects.

Good morning everyone. My name is Inbal, and Im a phd candidate from the art history department at the Hebrew University. and today I want to present you a small piece of my research.

This is a fragment of a vessel painting dated from the fifth-century BCE. It was found in one of Artemis’s temples in Brauron, which is forty-five kilometers from Athens.

Let’s take a closer look at it. There are two figures on the vessel , wearing short black tuniks , and their body parts are in white. from their clothes and hairstyle, we can tell they are young female figures.
And They appear to be in motion

the black object between the figures, presumably an altar.
And On top of the altar, there is a palm tree.

This vessel raises many questions
First, what are the young women doing? Are they dancing? Running? If so, what are they running from?
שנית, מה המזבח מסמל?
Second, what does the altar represent?

And finally, the palm tree. Why is there a tree on the altar? And why a palm tree? There were no palm trees in this area.

Previous research claims that the painting portrays a cult ritual for Artemis, using two main arguments:

First, the geographic context: the vessel was found at one of Artemis’s temples—the Brauron temple.

Second, the textual sphere-we know of a few ancient texts that hint at the existence of women’s cult rituals in Brauron

However, none of these sources explain what this ritual was all about.
