Introduction Flashcards
What is a receptor?
The molecular target of a drug.
What is a prodrug?
A compound that is not intrinsically active, and is activated by some metabolic step after administration.
What is Pharmacodynamics?
The study of drug interaction with their receptors.
What is Pharmacokinetics?
The study of drug interactions with the body, ADME
absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion.
What are off-target effects?
Effects caused when a drug interacts with the incorrect receptor due to non-perfect specificity.
What are adverse effects?
Undesirable drug effects caused by on- and off-target effects. These effects range in severity and concurrance.
What are on-target effects?
The effect caused by the interaction between a drug and its specific receptor.
What is Pharmacogenomics?
The investigation of a patient’s genetic background and how this information may interact with the administration and mechanism of a drug.
What are drug interactions?
The interaction of two drugs such that one significantly and adversely affects the response to another.
