Intro to veterinary radiology Flashcards
Who discovered/invented xrays?
Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895
What year did Wilhelm Röntgen discover/invent xrays?
1895
First xrays was of..?
It was of Mr. Röntgen’s wife’s left hand on Dec 22nd, 1895.
The image was a “positive radiograph” causing the colors to be inverted.
(As opposed to the typical negative.)
What is fluoroscopy?
informally referred to as “fluoro”, is an imaging technique that uses X-rays to obtain real-time moving images of the interior of an object.
“xray video”
radiation doses can be high
Who discovered evidence of radioactivity and when?
Henri Becquerel in 1896
Radioactivity is also known as
radio decay, the spontaneous decomposition of an unstable atomic nucleus which results in emission of particles and/or electromagnetic radiation (gamma photons).
Bq is
radioactivity unit
radioactivity unit is denoted..?
Bq or becquerel
Marie Curie was…?
a french physicist and chemist
What did Marie Curie discover and when?
radium and polonium radioactive elements in 1898.
1903 received the Nobel Prize in Physics.
1911 received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Angiography is
the X-ray imaging of blood vessels using contrast agents injected into the bloodstream through a thin plastic tube (catheter) that is placed directly in the blood vessel.
The angiograms taken can clarify the condition of the blood vessels and
the blood supply of the organs, and allows the treatment of certain
blood diseases.
CT is
Computertomography, diagnostic imaging
CT can expose people to relatively large amounts of ionizing radiation
Different planes in CT
axial
coronal
sagittal
which plane is this
axial

coronal
which plane is this
sagittal
what CT plane
axial plane
The axial plane can be thought of as slices through the patient. The axial plane is the one that radiologists use the most, but it is not the most intuitive, and the anatomic right and left are reversed on the image.

define mammography
the process of using low-energy X-rays (usually around 30 kVp) to examine the human breast for diagnosis and screening.
define DXA
DXA is an abbreviation for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
also known as bone densitometry
Bone mineral density (BMD) is measured. Usually bone density is measured in the spine L1-L4 and / or femoral neck.
Bone densitometry DXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absortiometry) is used to
diagnose osteoporosis or bone loss, to assess the need for treatment and its effectiveness.
Usually bone density is measured in the spine L1-L4 and / or femoral neck.
