intro to stats Flashcards
statistical inference
builds models and generates hpotheses to test them
statistical inference process
population -> sample -> sample stats -> estimated population parameter
sample
represents population
-if you dont have acess to entire population, pull smaller groups that rep population
population
what we are studying, have to tjink about who qualifies for it
estimated population parameter
parameter comes form population/is population
-able to make conclusion and relate it back to population
statistical inference is one step beyond
descriptive stats
elements
entities on which data is collected
example of elements
individuals
variable
characteristics of interest for elements
exampe of variable
income or marital status
obersvation
set of measurements for particular element
nominal
label of names (can be numeric or not)
-gender race birthplace
ordinal
order of rankings is important
-excellent, good poor
interval
fixed unit of measurement, differnet between 2 values
-temp or SAT scores
ratio scal
have all properties of interval data and ratio values is meaningful (zero point is fixed)
-distance, height weight time
