Intro to Somatic Dysfunction Flashcards
What does TART stand for?
Tissue texture change
Asymmetry
Restriction of Motion
Tenderness
What is Tone?
Normal feel of the muscle in the relaxed state
What is Contraction?
Normal tone of a muscle when it shortens
What is Contracture?
Abnormal shortening of a muscle
What is Spasm?
Abnormal contraction maintained beyond physiologic need
What is Bogginess?
Increased fluid in a hypertonic muscle
What is Ropiness?
Hard, firm, rope-like or cord-like muscle tone
What is the difference between acute and chronic restrictions in motion?
Acute = ROM is sluggish, may be guarded Chronic = limited ROM, but motion itself feels normal
What is an anatomic barrier?
limit of motion imposed by anatomic structure
What is a physiologic barrier?
Limit of active motion (can be increased by a warm-up)
What is a restrictive barrier?
Functional limit within the anatomic ROM
What is an elastic barrier?
Range between the physiologic and anatomic barriers (area that can be increased via “warm-up”
