Intro to Scientific Research Flashcards
What are the four scientific cycles?
The theory-data cycle, the basic-applied research cycle, the peer-review cycle, and the journal-to-journalism cycle.
What is the theory-data cycle?
Cycle in which scientists collect data to test, change, or update their theories.
What is translational research?
Studies that se knowledge derived from basic research to develop and test solutions to real-world problems.
What is a journal?
A monthly or quarterly periodical containing peer-revised articles on a specific academic discipline or sub discipline.
What is peer review?
When an editor receives a manuscript, the editor sends it to 3 or 4 experts on the subject.
What is journalism?
News and commentary published or broadcast in the popular media and produced for a general audience.
What is the problem with the current journal-to-journalism study?
Journalists only write on sensationalist findings, not necessarily the most important ones.
What are some sources of error in journalism? (4)
Journalists may be unaware that they are misleading or misunderstanding results, journalists may be trying to provide a take-home message, journalists may mislead with snappy titles, and no context may be provided.
What cycle is considered the most important?
The theory-data cycle.
Why is the theory-data cycle considered the most important cycle?
Because it enables scientists to continue learning and thus improve the quality and diversity of their inquiries.
How does the peer review cycle contribute to scientific progress?
It holds the study accountable for itself by ensuring that it can be replicated with similar results.
How does the journal-to-journalism cycle contribute to scientific progress?
Scientists often derive inspiration for new research from the media. It also helps spread the word of new findings to the public.
