Intro To Radiology Flashcards
What is an x-ray?
A projectional image generated by passage of x-rays through an object
What are the rules of x-rays?
Imaging for skeletal trauma and acute injury initial evaluation of chronic bone
What are the seven types of bone fractures?
Transverse, linear, oblique non-displaced, oblique displaced, spiral, greenstick, comminuted
Where does growth occur?
At the epiphysis
What are the three stages of fracture healing and their duration?
Inflammatory phase- haematoma formation hours to days
Repetitive phase - angiogenesis, callus formation days to weeks
Remodelling phase- remodelling of callus months to years
Tissue and their colours on CT scans
Air- black Fat- black Water- very dark grey Soft tissue- shades of Grey Trabecular bone- white Cortical bone- white
What is the role of ultrasound?
Looking at fluid collections and tendons and nerves
What is the role of MRI?
Definition of normal anatomy detection of pathology used for assessment of bones joints associated soft tissue
Difference between T1 and T2?
T1 looking at fat
T2 more fluid sensitive
What is STIR?
Fluid sensitive sequence
What is nuclear imaging?
Radio isotope labelled biologically active drugs that are administered to the patients to serve as a marker of biological activity
What is nuclear imaging used for?
To assess areas of metabolic the active phone such as localising bone forming metastatic lesions and healing fractures
