Basic Concepts Flashcards
Three major components?
Bone
Connective tissue
Skeletal muscle
Functions of skeletal muscle?
Locomotion, posture, metabolic and venous return
Functions of different type of connective tissue?
Tendon- force transmission muscle to bone
Ligament- support bone to bone
Fascia- compartmentalisation
Cartilage- decrease friction
What is avascular necrosis?
Loss of blood supply to the bone
The blood supplies to the bones?
Periosteal arteries
Epiphyseal arteries
Three main classifications of joints?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
Fibrous vs cartilaginous vs synovial?
Fibrous- collagen, limited mobility, found where great strength is required
Cartilaginous- limited mobility, found at the end of growing bones p
Synovial- highly mobile, found all over skeleton
Different types of synovial joints?
Plane, hinge, pivot, saddle, condyloid, ball and socket
Define origin and insertion?
Origin- stationary proximal anchor point
Insertion- mobile distal attachment point
What are the three types of muscle contraction?
Concentric- muscle pulls while shortening
Eccentric contraction- muscle pulls while lengthening
Isometric- muscle pulls while staying same length
What are the five types of muscle?
Parallel Circular Fusiform Triangular Pennate
Why do tenons heal slowly?
Poor blood supply and little water
What is an aponeurosis?
Sheet like tendons (flattened)
