Intro to Psyc Flashcards
quasi-experimental study
a study in which random assignments to conditions is not used. Instead, we rely on existing group memberships.
Outcome Variable
Dependent Variable
Predictor Variable
Independent variable
External Validity
the extent to which the results of studies can be generalized to the real world
-can’t have validity without reliability
-accuracy (chem)
Directionality Problem
correlational studies only allow us to determine whether these is an association between two variables, but not whether one of the variables being measures is actually causing the noted changes in the other variable
Spurious correlations
Situations in which two or more variables appear causally connected, but their association is purely random
-(only correlational studies)
COnfounding Variables
variables that researchers are not purposely studying (not the predictor variable or outcome variable) that unexpectedly influence both the predictor value and the outcome variable, and therefore undermines our ability to draw causal conclusions from a study
subject reactivity
Reliability
the ability to yield the same results each time
-Is the measure consistent?
-precision (chem)
