Intro To Physiology Flashcards

1
Q

Define physiology

A

Physiology is a branch of science that studies the function of the human body, explaining the mechanism of action (mechanistic) and why the function happens in the body (teleological).

Q

Basic cell functions include:

A

1) Synthesizing protein and other components needed for cellular structure, growth, and other cellular functions

2) Obtaining nutrition and O2 from the external environment of the cell

3) Performing chemical reactions that use food and O2 to make energy for the cell

4) Controlling, to an extent, the exchange of materials between the cell and its immediate environment.

5) Removal of CO2 and waste products gotten from those chemical reactions

6) Many cells have the ability to reproduce except nerve and muscle cells who have lost the ability. However, repair is possible.

7) Movement of materials from one part of the cell to the other in carrying out cellular activities (intracellular movement)

8) Being sensitive and responsive to the changes in the external environment of the cell.

Q

What is respiration?

A

Respiration is the process by which food substance is broken-down in the presence of oxygen to release energy which is used for life processess, CO2 and H2O as the by-products.
