intro to perception Flashcards
sensation
function of low-level biochemical/neurological events that begin with the impinging of a stimulus upon a receptor cells of a sensory organ
perception
organization, identification and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment
how do sensation and perception relate
sensation detects and perception creates useful information out of surroundings
perceptual process
stimulus- light reflected/focused- receptor process- neural process- (perception-recognition) - action
distal stimulus
pjysical thing in the world we are perceiving
ex. a tree
proximal stimulus
energy that arrives at the sensory surface
ex. light
transduction
converting proximal stimulus into neural signal
- rod and cone receptors change light energy into electrical energy
neural processing
neuron receives information- processes and sends out input to the next neuron
bridging mind/brain
cognitive processes ARE neural processes
percept
product of perception
ex. this is a table
perception and recognition
perception–> i see something
recognition–> its an oak tree
knowledge
anything a person brings to a situation
ex. to understand that it is a table you see, you have to have a prior idea of what a table is
interactive processes (top-down and bottom up)
perceptual process is an interactive process
- what we see influences what we know
- what we know influecnes what we see
(both top-down and bottom-up)
dynamic perceptual process
acting and perceiving are in a constant feed back loop
- we use information to inform how we act in the world and guiding movements to interact
principle of representation
our senses/mind/brain do not have direct access to distal stimuli, only to representations
ex. light from a pipe is not a pipe
