Intro to parasite Flashcards
How many types of symbiotic relationships are there?
There are 5 types
What are the types of symbiotic relationships?
Predator/ prey Commensalism Phoresis Mutualism Parasitism
What is a predator/prey relationship?
One is being benefited at the others expense
What is an incidental parasite?
The parasite is in the wrong host in the wrong location
What is superparasitism?
Multiples of the same parasite
What is an endoparasite?
A parasite that lives in the body of the host
What is an example of an endoparasite?
Heartworm
What is an ectoparasite?
A parasite that lives on the body of the host
What is an example of an ectoparasite?
Flea
What is multiparasitism?
Different types of parasites living in/on one host
How is the hosts expense deterimed?
Trivial
sunbstantial
Unbearable
What are two types of migration?
Tracheal
Somatic
What is an example of a fluke?
Fasciola Hepatica
What is a definitive host?
A host that harbors the adult stage of a parasite
What is a transport host?
A host that is used by a parasite for transportation
What type of life cycle do dog and cat flukes have?
Indirect
What are the physical features of a fluke?
They are flat, leaf-shaped, and look similar to leeches. They also have suckers, hooks, or clam-like appendages.
What is an erratic or aberrant parasite?
It is a parasite that wanders to an unusual location in which it doesn’t typically live.
What is an obligatory parasite?
A parasite that must live inside the host in order to survive.
What is a psuedoparasite?
An object or creature that can be mistaken for a parasite, but is not an actual parasite.
What is an indirect life cycle?
The parasite must go through a host in order to develop.
Explain somatic migration.
Larvae travels from the stomach, through the hepatic portal circulation, then throught the liver and then proceeds to travel to different sites.
Parasitism relationship
Involves two different species of organisms in which one lives on/in the other and may potentially cause harm.
What is a parasite?
A small organism that lives on/ina larger organism that is the host.
