what is fordyce spots?
Small raised white/yellowish bumps found on buccal mucosa and lips.
They are SEBACEOUS glands (secret sebum)
Not pathology
what is linea alba?
horizontal asymptomatic white leson
usually found along the occlusal plane
histologically there is extra keratin deposition so the keratin layer will appear thicker. (Hyperkeratosis)
what is geographic tongue?
asymptomatic, very rare condition. Irregular patchy appearance on tongue constantly changing. Reassure pt that its not dangerous
If theres symptoms such as hot/spicy foods/toothpaste, AVOID TRIGGERS, SLS free toothpaste
what is fissured tongue?
variation of normal anatomy, usually no symptoms. Not dangerous, no tx needed.
Encourage good OH + gently brushing tongue
what is black hairy tongue?
HYPERPLASIA of filiform papillae
buildup of pigment inducing bacteria + food debris
asymptomatic, stop smoking and light brushing.
Specific cause isnt clearly known.
What is desquamative gingivitis?
it is described as full thickness erythema (redness/inflammation) of the gingiva
Descriptive term
Plaque exacerbates it, not causes it.
Management of PERIO is important
what is a bony exostosis?
usually benign overgrowth of calcified bone - can be associated with parafunction
present on palate mandible
can interfere with denture placement
