Intro to Neuroscience Flashcards
what does Rostral mean?
refers to the anterior (front) of the brain.
what does Caudal mean?
refers to the posterior (back) of the brain.
what does Dorsal mean?
refers to the top of the brain or back of the spine.
what does Ventral mean?
refers to the bottom of the brain or front of spine.
what does Medial mean?
anything close to the midline.
what does Lateral mean?
anything further away from the midline.
where is a Midsagittal section?
section on the rostral-caudal axis along the midline.
where is a Horizontal section?
section cut horizontally / dorsal-ventral axis.
where is a Coronal section?
section cut downwards on a medial-lateral axis
what makes up grey matter?
cell bodies, neurons, and glia.
what makes up white matter?
neuronal axons - myelinated.
what do we have one of in each hemisphere?
ventricular system
2 lateral ventricles - they link to a third ventricle around the diencephalon level.
what does the third ventricle link to via what?
third ventricle links to the fourth ventricle via the cerebral aqueducts around the pons level.
the fourth ventricle goes on to form what?
the small spinal cavity that runs through the spinal cord.
grey matter in the spinal cord is made up of what two horns?
the dorsal horn and the ventral horn.
