Intro to neuro rehab Flashcards
State of being awake, readiness for activity
arousal
Responsiveness to a task or concentrating on information without being distracted by other stimuli
attention
Mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses
cognition
What are the measures for arousal, attention, and cognition?
- Glasgow Coma Scale
- Rancho Los Amigos Levels of Cognitive Function
- Mini-Cog
- Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)
- Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)
- Orientation x ?
What are things to remember for in neuron rehab when working with patients?
- Practice
- Feedback
- Environment
- Continually look for ways to improve quality of life
- Continually look for ways to motivate your patient
- Keep in mind cognition and attention levels
- Don’t speak down to your patients
- Decrease their dependence on you
- Impossible to tell patient how to do everything
- What are your patient’s goals? Why are they here?
- End the day with success
What is the progression in terms of type of practice?
start with distributed and move towards massed
- improves endurance
How is Neurologic PT different than Orthopedic PT?
- Cognition can be involved
- Progressive dx
- Can be more complicated
- Goals are different: Esp w/a progressive disorder, goals might be maintenance; Centered around QOL, mobility, decrease pain
What is the difference between massed and spaced practice
- Massed = less breaks; more functional, improves endurance
- Spaced practice (distributed practice) = more less breaks; better for learning the right movement
What are the two types of feedback?
- Extrinsic = KP (happens during) and KR (happens after)
- Intrinsic = assess if it it was easy, hard, or somewhere in btwn
- feedback should be a balance of the two
Why would you used a closed environment?
- it’s predicable; start here and progress towards a more open environment, which is more real life
Inner force that provides the standards by which patterns of choices are made; Made up of beliefs, emotions, attitudes about what is best and what is not good; Internal and difficult to measure; Reflected in our behavior and actions
Values
- play a critical role in the decision making process
What are some value conflicts you may have?
- Your values have an impact on your clinical decisions & they may not be the same as your patient’s values
- Patients often are coming to you as a result of placing other values and needs above physical health and prevention of injury
- Can you remain nonjudgmental?
- Will it affect your behavior towards the patient and family?
- Are you as a PT detracting from OR facilitating the rehabilitation process?
