Intro to Nervous System Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is to maintain a constant internal environment despite changes in the external environment
Give an example of homeostasis in the human body
An example of homeostasis can include sweating or shivering
What is the function of the nervous system?
To maintain homeostasis
What are the two sections of the nervous system?
- Central nervous system
2. Peripheral nervous system
What are the two sections of the central nervous system
- Brain
2. Spinal cord
What are the two sections of the peripheral nervous system?
- Sensory somatic
(Soma = body) - Automatic nervous system
(Auto = self)
What are the two sections of the automatic nervous system?
- Sympathetic
2. Parasympathetic
Give some examples of the effect of the sympathetic automatic nervous system on the body
Increase Breathing Sweating Adrenaline Increase Heart Rate Increase Blood Sugar Pupils Dilate
What does the parasympathetic automatic nervous system do?
It brings everything back to normal (except adrenaline)
What are the 4 F’s of stress?
- Feeding
- Fighting
- Fleeing
- Fornicating (sex)
How long does it take adrenaline to leave your system?
90 minutes
