Dynamic Equilibrium Flashcards
How do semicircular canals work?
Contains liquid that move when we move our head which bends small nerve hairs that send action potentials to the brain
How does the brain know what direction we are moving?
Depending on where in the canal the signal comes from, our brain will interpret out motion in different directions
What are the utricle and saccule?
Small chambers in the vestibule
How does the utricle and saccule detect linear acceleration?
Use nerve hair cells
What are the utricle and saccule filled with?
Fluid and calcium carbonate stones
What are the calcium carbonate stones called?
Otoliths
How do otoliths help with dynamic equilibrium?
When you move the otoliths hit the nerve cells and send an action potential
What is dynamic equilibrium?
Balance while in motion
What is static equilibrium?
Balance while motionless
Where do we receive information about our body position?
From sensory neurons all over the body
What in the ears relay information about the head position?
Utricle and saccule
Where is the signal sent?
To the cerebrum
Motion is detected by
Semicircular canals
Utricle and Saccule
