Intro To Motor Learning And Performance Flashcards
Define skill:
The ability to bring about some end result with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of energy or time
Three components of skills
1) Goal directed (end result)
2) Reproducible (max certainty)
3) Efficient (minimum outlay of energy
Not all movements are skills…
All skills involve movement
Skills involve what three things?
1) Perceiving the environment
2) Deciding how, when and where to move
3) Producing the movement
What is an open skill and example
The environment is variable and unpredictable
Ex. Driving
What is a closed skill and example?
The environment is stable and predictable
Ex. Darts
What is a discrete movement and example?
Has a defined beginning and end and is usually a brief duration
Ex. Clap
What it serial skills and example?
Group of discrete skills strung together to make a more complicated skill
Ex. Gymnastics routine
What is a continuous skill and example?
Has an arbitrary beginning and end continues for minute or hours
Ex. Walking
Why study skills?
They make up most of observable human life
What are theories?
Structure whose purpose is to explain how various phenomena occur
What is a hypothesis?
Forming a question and answering it using the scientific model
What is the scientific model?
1) Research Question
2) Hypothesis
3) Collect data
4) Analyze data
5) Test hypothesis
How do we measure skills?
with maximum certainty and minimum time and energy
Time is easy to measure, energy is not
What are three ways to measure certainty of discrete tasks?
Constant error
Absolute error
Variable error
