Intro to Medicine Flashcards
How is the body Organised?
Complex society of cells, organised structurally and functionally into tissues, organs and systems.
Define organs
collections of tissues, usually of different types, that synchronise to perform a more complex function
Define Tissues
groups of cells that share the same characteristics or specializations and perform a function
4 types of tissue
Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, nervous tissue, muscle tissue
Define Organ Systems
combined/coordinated to perform a function. Multiple organ systems = organism
Give equation of life and why its important
Nutrients + O2 = Energy (ATP) + waste (inc. CO2)
All cells require energy to survive; thus supply and demand of energy must be balanced to prevent disturbance to the system (homeostasis)
How does the cardiovascular system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
deliver O2 and nutrients to cells, removes waste from cells
How does the respiratory system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
acquires O2 and disposes of CO2
How does the gastrointestinal system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
acquires nutrients, disposes of waste
How does the renal system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
disposes of waste
How does the musculoskeletal system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
sources nutrients, removes us from danger, protects from threat
How does the immune system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
protects from INFECTION
How does the NERVOUS system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
coordinates other systems
How does the ENDOCRINE system maintain health and optimal homeostasis?
coordinates other systems, major role in allowing cellular access to nutrients that have been absorbed
How does the REPRODUCTIVE system maintain health and optimal homeostasis? - kinda bit different
ensures continuation of life
