Intro to MBB and the Nervous System Flashcards
Neuropil
Area where axons and dendrites synapse
Longitudinal plane
Any plane perpendicular to transverse (horizontal) plane
Coronal and saggital are examples
Functions of frontal lobe
- Planning behavior
- Language production (broca’s area)
- Higher order cognition
Functions of temporal lobe
- Recognition of stimuli
- Audition
- Visual processing
- Learning and memory
- Language comprehension (Wernicke’s area)
Functions of parietal lobe
- Spatial orientations
- Language comprehension (part of Wernicke’s area)
3 components of basal ganglia and general function
Caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus
Groups of neurons that regular complex motor movements
Corpus callosum
Largest commisure connecting the two cerebral hemispheres and largest white matter structure of the brain
Anterior commissure
Commissure connecting the two cerebral hemispheres (mostly temporal lobe) across the midline
Internal capsule
White matter separating the caudate nucleus and thalamus from the globus pallidus and putamen
Major route connecting cerebral cortex adn brainstem/spinal cord
Diencephalon
Composed of thalamus and hypothalamus
Thalamus: relays sensory and motor signals to cerebral cortex (regulation of sleep, consciousness, and alertness)
Hypothalamus: links nervous system to endocrine system via pituitary gland (homeostatis and reproductive functions)
Pyramidal decussation
Area where the majority of fibers od the corticospinal tract (motor pathway) cross over to control movement of the opposite side of the body
Occurs at foramen magnum at the caudal end of the medulla
Rostral reticular region (brainstem) in upper pons and midbrain
Regular consciousness through modulation of thalamic activity
Lesions here can cause lethargy and coma
Location of lateral ventricles
One in each of the cerebral hemispheres
“First and second ventricles”
Location of the third ventricle
Found within the diencephalon (thalamas + hypothalamus)
Location of fourth ventricle
Surrounded by the pons, medulla, and cerebellum
