Intro To Life Sciences Flashcards
What is the scientific method?
The scientific approach to gathering information that consists of a series of steps
Observation
New observations are made, and previous data are studied
Hypothesis
A suggested explanation that accounts for an observation
Experiment
Used to test a hypothesis andor eliminate one or more multiple hypotheses
Conclusion
Results are analyzed, and the hypothesis is supported or rejected
Theory
Many experiments and observations support a theory
What is a scientific theory and some examples
Concepts based on the results/ conclusions of a huge number of observations and experiments ( cell, Gene, evolution )
Explain evolution is just a theory and why its a misleading statement
This is a misleading statement because the hypothesis that evolution has occurred is an accepted scientific fact supported by evidence
Hierarchical organization of life from atoms to ecosystems
Cellular level = atoms, molecules, macromolecules, organelle.
Organismal level = tissue, organ, organ system, organism
Population level= population, species,community, ecosystem
Cell theory
All living organisms are made of cells, and all living cells come from other living cells
Molecular basis of inheritance
DNA contain genes that serve as “instructions” for guiding the development and control living organisms
Evolutionary change
Life-forms have evolved varying characteristics to adopt to varied environments. This is how species avoid extinction in the face of unpredictable environmental change over time and an explanation for earths biodiversity
Evolutionary change
Some characteristics of earlier organisms are preserved and passed on to future generations, shared common ancestry
