Intro to IES Flashcards
What are environmental sciences?
The study of how humans intercat with the enviroment
What are the four main environmental problems?
- Overpopulation
- Resource deplation
- Pollution
- Loss of biodiveristy
What is an ecological footprint?
it is the world’s premier measure of humanity’s demand on nature. It allows to calculate the human pressure on the planet.
What is population?
A group of organisms of the same species living in a particular area.
What is a species’ biotic potential?
The maximum number of individuals a species can produce.
What are limiting factors?
Anything that constrains a population’s size and slows or stops it from growing
What is environmental resistance?
All limiting factors that reduce the growth rate of a population
What is carrying capacity?
Numbers of species that can be supported in a given area within natural resource limits.
- No population can live beyond the enviroment’s carrying capacity for too long.
What is natural capital?
It refers to all of the natural resources on which poeple depend.
What are the abiotic limiting factors?
- Chemical or mineral availability
- Climate
- Energy supply
What are biotic limiting factors?
- Predation
- Parasitism
- Competition
- Increasing population density
When does overpopulation occur?
Occurs when the population of a species exceeds the carrying capacity of its ecological home.
What is the crude birth and crude death rate?
Are the numbers of births and deaths per 1000 people in the population at mid-year
What is growth rate?
Is the number of people added or substracted to a population in a year due to natural decrease or increase and net migration.
