Intro to Fluids Flashcards
Difference between hypovolaemia and dehydration
Hypovolaemia- loss of ciculating volume (ECF), salt and water losses
Dehydration- loss of body water (2/3 ICF adn 1/3 ECF), just water lost- always hypernatremic
What parameters give information about hypovolaemia
HR
CRT
PCV/TS
Lactate
Urine Output
What parameters give information about dehydration
Dec BW
Sunken eyes
Tacky MM
Inc skin tent
How quickly to replace hypovolaemic defecit
6-8hrs
How quick to replace dehydration defecit
12-24 hrs
How to estimate fluid defecit (L)
% fluid deficit x bodyweight
When to give enteral vs IV/rectal fluids
Enteral- For patients with less than 5% defecit
Rectal/IV- Patients with more than 5% deficit
3 approaches to replacing fluid deficit
- Shock dose fluids (60ml/kg for cat/sheep/goat, 90ml/kg for dog/horse/ pig as bolus)
- Give half deficit as bolus and the rest with maintenance over the next 6-8hrs)
- Fluid challenge- start on 10ml/kg for cat/sheep/goat or 20ml/kg for dog/horse/pig and keep reassessing
How much Hartmanns if equivalent to 1l hypertonic saline
3-5l
Maintenance fluid rate
2ml/kg/hr
