Fluid Types Flashcards
What happens to iso- hypo- adn hyper- tonic fluids when administered parenerally
Hypo (water/electrolytes)- absorbed systemically
Iso (electrolytes)- remain in GIT
Hypertonic (Mgso4)- Water enters GIT
When would hypertonic fluids be given enterally
Pelvic flexure impactions
Requirements for enteral fluids
need GI motility and perfusion
-> used when fluid deficit<5%
Use of per rectum fluids (proctoclysis)
Provision of maintenance until IV access obtained
In conjunction with IV to reduce therapy costs
Use in dysphagic animals- can’t take oral fluids
Equine- oesophageal tear in foal, tetanus, gastric impaction
Can be use intermittently or continuously
Amounts from maintenance to twice maintenance could be used
