intro to fluids Flashcards
Total body water (percent of body weight) in infants
70% (bc of low body fat and bone mass)
Total body water (percent of body weight) in males
60%
Total body water (percent of body weight) in females
50% (higher percent of fatty tissue
Total body water (percent of body weight) in elderly/obese
lower proportion of water
What is intracellular fluid (ICF)
water within cells
what is extracelular fluid (ECF)
water outside cells
Electrolyte properties
ionic bonds, dissociate into ions in water, conduct electrical currents, cause fluid shifts.
Non-Electrolyte properties
covalent bonds, don’t dissociate in water, dont conduct electricity, can cause fluid shifts.
What control fluid balance
Thirst mechanism (hypothalamus), Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH), Atrial natriuretic peptide
how does water move between ivf and isf compartments
hydrostatic pressure (pushes water out of IVF into ISF) and Osmotic prssure (does the opposite).
