Electrolyte imbalances Flashcards
Purpose of Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System (RAAS)
Regulates Blood Press. and Fluid balance by INCREASING BLOOD VOLUME AND PRESSURE
What is Aldosterone
Secreted by adrenal cortex. More aldo= sodium reabsorption=water reabsorption=ecf increase. less aldo= no sodium reabsorption=sodium excreted in urine.
Angiotensin I
triggers release of other hormones
Angiotensin II
Causes arteries to constrict and increase cardiac output resulting in increased bp and volume. increases thirst
ADH
more water resabsorption into the blood, increases sodium reabosrption.
what is ANP
Hormone antagonistic to the angiotensin pathway. it decreases bp
most abundant cation in ICF
Potassium
Role of Potassium
Electric conductivity in muscles and nerves
Calcium balance importance
Blood coagulation, membrane permeability, cell secretion, muscle contraction
What regulates calcium balance
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin
Major anion in ECF
Chloride
ECF electrolytes
Na: nerve muscle cell interaction, CL: osmotic pressure
Ca: stabilize cell membrane and reduce permeability, coagulation, bone and teeth
ICF Electrolyes
K: Cell excitability, nerve conduction, muscle contraction
PO4: Energy metabolism, w/calcium it mineralizes bones and teeth
Mg: catalyst for enzyme reaction, neuromusclur contract, cardiovascular system.
