Intro to Female Repro Flashcards
What is Reproduction?
Is a sequence of events beginning with development of the reproductive system in embryos. We want animals capable of having more animals
Andrology
Study and treatment of male animals
Gynecology
Study of reproductive issues in women
Theriology
The branch of veterinary medicine that focuses on all reproduction
Obsterics
Branch of reproductive physiology that specializes in female before, during, and after partition
Ovaries
Ovaries- produce gametes and variety of hormones- produce eggs variety of hormones
Oviducts
optimal environment for fertilization and preattachment of embryo- right of uterus, between uterus and overy catch the egg
Uterus
- environment for sperm transport, early embryogenesis, site of attachment- sperm have to get to oviduct to fertilie the egg, grow a little bit before find spot to settle
Cervix
- barrier into uterus, secretes mucus (bad stuff ou), produces cervical seal- gets bad things out that might cause infections
Vagina
copulatory organ, lubricant mucus layer during estrus
Serosa ( Outer)
covers the reproductive tract-outer covering (any of organs)
Muscularis
2 double layer of smooth muscle. Provides ability to contract- muscle, contacts to push sperm where to go, pushes egg to uterus
Submucosa
- contains blood vessels, nerves, lymphatics
Mucosa ( Inner)
lines the lumen with different types of mucosal epithelium (reproductive tract, inside is mucosa layer)
Where does the reproductive tract develop?
in the retroperitoneal position
Rtero is behind
Peritoneum
- connective tissue lining of the abdominal cavity
What does the broad ligament house?
the vascular, nerves, and lymphatics
What is the primary function of the Ovary?
to produce female gametes (ova)-only goal is
to make eggs
What hormones does the Ovary produce?
estrogen, progesterone -estrogen shows signs of
heat, pro keep it pregnent
Corpus luteum
produces oxytocin, relaxin, inhibin, and activin
First Layer of Ovary
Tunica Albuginea
outer connective tissue surface-outer covering of ovary
Ovarian cortex
contains oocytes, contains CL, contains corpus albicans(degenerating CL which produces progesterone-
when animal thinks its pregent)-middle of it the meat of it
Ovarian medulla
- Central portion of the ovary and contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic
Mare ovaries are different
The medulla and cortex are reversed
Ovulation occurs in an ovulation fossa-
indention right in middle
Can only palpate the follicle (not the CL which is internal)-is or was
What does the Uterus Connect
Oviducts to cervix
Explain a duplex in the Uterus
Has single vaginal opening on exterior and it bifurcates into 2 vaginas and 2 cervices (opossum)
Explain Bicornuate Uterus
2 uterine horns and small uterine body
Mare, cow, bitch, queen, sow
Uterus opens into the vagina through the cervix
Explain Simple Uterus
Single uterine body
Primates, humans
Function of Uterine Function
Sperm Transport, maternal contribution to the placenta
Endometrium?
Composed of mucosa and submucosa
Mucosal epithelium secretes material into lumen of the uterus to enhance embryo development it makes a subestence that keeps baby alive
Characteristics of cervix
Thick walled
Provides lubrication and flushing system
Barrier during pregnancy- help not getting anything sick
