Intro to Epi: Burden of Respiratory Disease Flashcards
Describe the two types of prevalence
- Point Prevelance
- one point in time (do you have asthma)
- Period Prevalence
- between stated periods of time (asthma in last 12 months/lifetime asthma)
Describe two ways in which we collect data to describe the burden of asthma in the community
- Routine data collection (electronic records, bills, national stats ONS)
- Surveys (questionnaires, interviews)
Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using electronic records, bilss or national stats to assess burden of disease
Advantages
- Easy access
Disdavantages
- Reporting bias
- Multiple codes for disease
- Recall bias
- Incomplete records
- Not all patients with disease are admitted
Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using surveys (interviewed) to assess burden of disease
Advantages
- Non-invasive
- Cheap and quick
Disadvantages
- Needs standardisation
- Interview skills, same definitions
- missing information
- transcription errors
- recall/report bias
Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using self-administered questionnaires to assess burden of disease
Advantages:
- More honest
- More likely to fill out
Disadlimited by advantages:
- Limited by patient understanding of questionnaire
List some biases that occur in epidemiological survyes
Sample representative of population
Standardised data collection
Standardised definitions used (positive tests, biomarkers)
