Intro to DNA Vocab Flashcards
A twisted ladder shape of DNA molecules. Composed of two strands of DNA that wind around one another, with the nitrogenous bases on the inside which forms a hydrogen bonds that hold everything together.
Double Helix
Forms two complementary nitrogenous bases joined together by hydrogen bonds.
Base Pair
Fundamental unit of heredity, segment of DNA that codes for a specific protein or RNA molecule. They carry instructions needed for building and maintaining an organism, and are passed down from parents to offspring.
Gene
Serves as the fundamental building block of DNA and RNA. The nucleic acids that control hereditary traits. Made up of 3 components: a five-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous bases joined together.
