What is the function of the hair?
thermoregulation, sebum, protection against external factors, social/sexual interaction, epithelial and melanocyte stem cells, apocrine sweat
What is the difference between vellus hair and terminal hair?
Velds hair can be found all over the body (except palms, soles, lips, external genitalia), terminal hair is on brows, scalp and eyelashes.
what are the three stages of the hair cycle? What happens in each of these stages?
Anagen (formation of hair), catagen (regressing phase) and telogen (resting phase)
What forms the pilosebacious unit?
Sebaceous gland, hair follicle, arrestor pilir muscle, dermal papilla
What is the infundibulum and isthus?
Infundibulum is top part of the hair follicle isthmus is the bottom part (up till sebaceous glad)
Where can you find hair follicle stem cells? Where do the migrate to form what?
In the bulge of the pilosebaciius unit. The migrate distally to form sebaceous gland and medially to form hair follicle.
What are the functions of nails?
protect distal phalanx, counterpressure for walking and tactile sensation, increase dexterity, enhance sensory discrimination, facilitate scratching and grooming
What is the hyponychium?
Where the nail detaches from the skin
What is the eponychium?
The skin that grows to cover the lunar part of the nail
What is the function of the nail matrix?
To produce nail plate.
