Intro to derm- functions of skin Flashcards
Which bacteria can be found in the skin, and which predominant? What is their role?
their role is to provide competitive protection from harmful bacteria (immune modulation and epithelial health). Mist common is actinobacteria, firmicutes (eg clostidria and bacilli staphylococcus) and proteobacteria
What are the roles of the skin?
physical barrier, immune barrier, thermoregulation, sensation metabolic functions and aesthetic appearance (idiots play trumpets so mothers awake)
Which cells are involved in the immunological function of the skin?
macrophages, langerhans cells (APCs)
What do Tregs do?
regulate T cells in absence of danger
What other immune cells help with immunological surveillance? Where are these found? Why are they here?
in dermis, macrophages, tissue-resident t-cells and dendritic cells
What are defensins and cathelicidins? What is their function?
keratin-derived endogenous antibiotics, which provide defence against fungi, bacteria and viruses
What features of the skin provide the skin the ability to act as a physical barrier?
Stratum corneum (water resistant), subcutaneous fat (cushions trauma), melanin (against UV light damage)
What 3 features of the skin allow for thermoregulation?
hairs with erector muscles sweat glands, vasoconstriction and vasodilation.
What are the metabolic functions of the skin?
produce precursor of vitamin D, subcutaneous fat, calorie reserve, leptin release (regulates hunger and energy metabolism)
