What is Communication?

What does it mean to communicate successfully?
…to stimulate the meanings we intend in the minds of others, we achieve understanding.
What is the purpose of communication?
…to manage our problems, create opportunities, make decisions, and connect with others in meaningful and productive ways.
What are the 4 Challenges of Communication?
- Significant intellectual and psychological resources are required.
- Not everyone appreciates the value of communication.
- We over-rely on digitally mediated communication.
- Intercultural understanding can be difficult.
Linear Model of Communication
- Decide Message
- Encode message (transcribe it).
3 . Transmit message over a channel - Receiver perceives message (acknowledges it).
5, Received decodes message (comprehension).
Transactional Model of Communication
The addition of feedback, along with consideration of the factors that make accurate decoding of messages difficult.
What is to be considered in transaction model of communication?
Context (environment), roles, and rules.
Communication Competence
Must be motivated, continue to develop comm. skills, be sensitive to surroundings.
